Essay on Natural Disasters In Nepal

Natural disasters are any natural phenomenon that cause a lot of damages and loss of life. Landslide, flood, drought, storm, soil erosion, etc. are common natural disasters in Nepal. These calamities result many deaths and property loss every year. Similarly, earthquake which is an uncontrollable natural disaster claims many deaths and a lot of property.

Nepal is a mountainous country. The people of the hilly regions have faced with landslides, floods, drought and earthquake. Among them, landslides and floods are common and usual natural disasters in mountains. Deforestation is the main cause of these two disasters. Storms and floods are very usual in the Terai. During rainy seasons, many villages, towns and paddy fields are swept away by the floods in the Terai. Drought badly affects the economy of Nepal because we depend on agriculture. Among these disasters, storm is the least destructive one in Nepal.

Pollution, deforestation and destruction of other natural resources are the prime causes of the natural disasters in Nepal. Deforestation invites landslides, over flood and drought. While roads are being made in the hilly regions, landslides can be resulted. In the mountains, soil erosion is a regular process which decreases the fertility of the land. The main causes of soil erosion are traditional farming and deforestation. Pollution and deforestation cause the storms in Nepal. Normally, earthquake is resulted naturally. The earthquake of 2072 BS claimed more than millions of deaths of people in Nepal.

Human activities are responsible for all the disasters except earthquake. The natural disasters which are resulted by the different activities of human beings can be reduced by implementing some measures. By preserving forests, we can reduce human casualties and property loss from the landslides and over flood. Storms and droughts can be reduced by preserving the natural resources. By applying modern farming techniques, we can preserve the fertile soil stopping soil erosion. By making embankments of the rivers, we can reduce human casualties and property loss from floods. Similarly, we can make scientific buildings which are safe in earthquakes. In short, we have to preserve the nature to reduce the evils of natural disasters.

Except earthquake, most of the other natural disasters are caused as the result of careless and evil activities of human beings. If we human beings save the nature aptly and honestly, most of the natural disasters can be reduced. Therefore, natural disasters are closely related to human activities.
